|Southern Indiana Scuba has been in business since 1975. The company was started by Charles Beeker, who ran the business until 1991. During that time SCUBA grew in Bloomington.
Charles started the store and joined PADI in 1975. Selling Dacor, and Sherwood SCUBA equipment, he started in a small corner building on South Walnut Street. Later it expanded to a larger building across the street, then moved into 1023 S Walnut Street where we spent the next
twenty plus years. Charles had an opportunity to expand his role at Indiana University and sold the business to Robert Kessler in 1991.
Robert Kessler ran the business from 1991 to 1998 when he also had an opportunity to expand his role at Indiana University. During this time, Southern Indiana Scuba becomes an SSI training center as well as a PADI Dive Center. Taking on his role at Indiana University he sold
the store to Mark and Kim Brooks.
Mark has been involved in Southern Indiana Scuba since 1989, helping with services, sales and training. Mark's background prior to owning Southern Indiana Scuba was working for a major computer company, and working part-time at the store. Mark's real love was diving, but
computers paid the bills. Kim worked at Indiana University as a Office Manager. Mark and Kim took over ownership January 1, 1998. Kim is the president and Mark is the vice-president.
Mark handles daily operations and is in charge of the training program. Under Mark and Kim's ownership, the business has grown, we now carry ScubaPro, DUI Dry Suits, Dive Rite, teach PSI, PADI and SDI classes. The store has moved to 6500 S Empire Rd, Bloomington due to the
need for more space. The store now does in-house hydro testing, Nitrox fills and trains cylinder inspection.
